Architects in Ahmedabad: 14 firms leading the design conversation

BandukSmith Studio, founded in 2011 by architects Sachin Bandukwala and Melissa Smith, is a research-driven design practice that spans furniture, interiors, architecture and urban interventions. Their design philosophy places architecture in the mode of “repair”—responding to climate, craft, context and material cycles rather than imposing a wholly new form. Projects range from compact residential houses and incremental additions to public libraries and urban-scale refurbishments, yet share a focus on the generative tension between new and old, built and ambient. Their style is defined by inventive use of raw materials (steel, concrete, local stone), emphatic detailing and an ethic of reuse and transformation—minimal but richly tactile, contemporary but rooted in local practice and systems.

Ishita Sitwala

Founded in 2013 by architect Veeram Shah, Design Ni Dukaan is a multidisciplinary studio that approaches design as a continuum—spanning architecture, interiors and furniture—rather than partitioning these disciplines. Shah, who grew up in Navsari amid his father’s antique‐furniture collection, carries a deep sensitivity to craft and materiality. His design philosophy emphasises blurring boundaries between designer, artisan and occupant, and the design sensibility at play is unmistakable: pared-back geometries, natural materials, a deep respect for skilled artisanship and robust construction, and an intuitive understanding of how objects shape daily rituals. The typologies the studio commonly undertakes are diverse—from residential houses to offices and bespoke furniture pieces—yet they are unified by a rigorous attention to form, material and experience.

Maulik Patel

Established in 1987 by architect Rajesh Sheth, Designer’s Circle has steadily built a reputation for crafting luxurious, bespoke interiors and architectural environments that marry elegance with human-scale warmth. The studio’s design philosophy places the client’s life and story at the centre, weaving together high-end finishes, artisanal detailing and spatial sequences that feel both opulent and deeply personal. While their typologies range across upscale residences, premium retail spaces and hospitality interiors, the common thread is a disciplined material palette—imported stones, brass accents, hand-woven textiles—combined with generous daylighting and curated finishes. Their visual signature brings opulence through calm proportions, layered textures, and a discreet timelessness that speaks of craft, context and enduring quality.
