Home renovations can be overwhelming, especially when dealing with an unusual layout or structural quirks. That’s exactly what the owners of a multilevel home in Vrané nad Vltavou faced when they decided to move back in after years of renting it out.

Built from Canadian cedar and set on a sloping plot, the house had an atypical floor plan, sloped ceilings, and angled walls—features that made renovation far from straightforward.

Looking to modernize while keeping the home’s original character, the owners turned to CASA MODERNA. The family-run interior design atelier specializes in complex solutions primarily for the interiors of new houses and apartments as well as exteriors, including reconstructions of existing buildings.

“The owners knew they wanted to emphasize natural materials but needed help with the whole design process, particularly due to the home’s unique layout,” says David Šesták, CASA MODERNA’s head designer and architect.

Realizing a full renovation would be more effective than piecemeal updates, CASA MODERNA reimagined the 175 sqm interior to balance design, function, and practicality.

Working with the home’s unconventional architecture meant navigating varying floor levels, sloped ceilings, and asymmetrical walls. The clients provided input on storage and functionality while leaving the creative details to the designers.

“Great emphasis was placed on details like the rounded corners of the bathroom cabinets, which match the shape of the washbasins,” says David. Polyurethane screeds were chosen for the floors and staircases, while warm oak flooring was installed upstairs to add contrast. The bathrooms feature epoxy screeds on both walls and floors, and the living room was given a focal point with ceramic wall cladding and a fireplace.

One of the standout elements of the redesign was a custom dining table created by CASA MODERNA’s team. Designed to mirror the home’s floor plan, it became the heart of the space.

“The clients trusted us to handle all aspects of the aesthetic and functional design, including the customized furniture we made in our workshop,” says Marek Šesták, who co-led the project. CASA MODERNA crafts one-of-a-kind furniture in-house and collaborates with leading manufacturers from Italy, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and Slovenia.

The renovation extended beyond the walls of the home, adding a terrace with a swimming pool, a relaxation house with a sauna, and a landscaped garden with a pond—creating a cohesive indoor-outdoor living experience.
