Nocaima Retreat– Rural Contemporary Reinterpretations
Nestled in the lush, undulating hills of Nocaima, Colombia, this small dwelling proposes a thoughtful and sensitive contemporary reinterpretation of traditional rural architecture.

The project revisits vernacular elements such as bamboo, pitched roofs, and open corridors, transforming them into deliberate architectural devices that both honor and challenge their cultural, material, and environmental origins while establishing new relationships with landscape and climate.

The conventional rural roof is redefined through a distinctive butterfly roof that collects and channels rainwater, integrating sustainability as an intrinsic part of the building’s aesthetic expression, environmental performance, and spatial identity.

This gesture not only reimagines a familiar typology but also establishes a poetic and technical dialogue between structure, technology, and nature, allowing architecture to become both responsive and expressive.

The structural system further reinforces this synthesis: columns composed of four intersecting bamboo culms—small homage to Mies van der Rohe—are anchored by black steel bases, merging artisanal craftsmanship with a refined technological sensibility.

The result is a spatial and structural framework that embodies tradiction, lightness, precision, and modern details.

Through these reinterpretations, the house becomes an artifice—a human-made construct that exalts its natural surroundings, cultural memory, and material honesty. It stands as a quiet yet radical proposal for contemporary rural living in Colombia: rooted, sustainable, and architecturally forward-thinking
