This charming, nostalgic home design is Kansas’s favorite, HGTV says
‘8 Wonders of Kansas Art’ stand the test of time
The Kansas Sampler Foundation in 2008 identified the “8 Wonders of Kansas Art,” which includes John Steuart Curry’s murals at the Kansas Statehouse.
Kansas has a lot of farmhouses.
So it should come as no surprise that the charming, nostalgic and comfortable home design known as “Farmhouse” was identified as being the Sunflower State’s favorite in a recent list put out by home improvement website HGTV.
The Farmhouse aesthetic, which was identified as being most popular in 26 states, typically features natural wood finishes, spacious layouts and neutral color palettes, HGTV said. Large porches are also a part of the design style.
“Perfectly imperfect, practical and comfortable, eclectic and classic — what’s not to love about American Farmhouse-inspired spaces?” HGTV said.
Here’s how each state’s favorite home design was identified
Interior design website Modsy identified the most popular design style for each state listed by HGTV, that network’s website said.
“Modsy’s interior designers went state-by-state to determine the favorite design styles from Coastal to Farmhouse, Country to Modern and the least popular option, Rustic,” HGTV said.
The results might surprise some, it said.
Here were the top choices for each state:
The 26 states where HGTV said the Farmhouse design was most popular were Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Missouri, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
HGTV said 16 states favored the Modern home design, with those being Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Vermont, Virginia and Washington
The Coastal design style, which features light color tones and open spaces, was identified as being most popular in four states, with those being Alaska, Delaware, Florida and Rhode Island.
The Country style was identified as being most popular in three states. Those were Indiana, New Hampshire and North Dakota.
The Rustic style was identified as being most popular in one state, New Mexico.
Farmhouse-style homes arrived in the 1700s in the U.S.
Farmhouse-style architecture originated in Germany and Scandinavia and arrived in the 1700s in the U.S., said the Cooperative Living website.
The style has become associated in particular with farmhouses in New England, said HGTV, which airs a program called “Farmhouse Fixer.”
Farmhouse-style homes tend to feature white coloring and tall ceilings, said the website of Florida-based Sater Design Collection Inc.
One reason Farmhouse-style homes are so likeable and prominent today across the U.S. is because they’re easy for homeowners to design to fit their needs, that site said.
“In addition, the homes are very open and have quality features,” it said.
